Wet IllustratedThursday May 31, 2012 - 8:00pm

WET ILLUSTRATED
a group committed to celebrating the legacies of weirdo pop outsiders like the Soft Boys, GuidedBy Voices and the Swell Maps- writing jagged pop songs imbued with skewed hooks and personal yet playful lyrics. The song structures which at first appear straightforward unravel to reveal sophisticated arrangements and evocative lyrics in the tradition of homespun pop-ists like The Homosexuals or Cleaners From Venus, all channeled through Wet Illustrated’s own idiosyncratic punk/pop visions.

THE MALLARD
The Mallard are a garage psych-rock trio from San Francisco. Their songs harness the naked abandon of 60's punk, but inject the form with a deranged spirit all their own. Close attention to texture and dynamics allow the band to explore unusual terrain – to grant access into unexpected realms of beauty and terror.

"They write catchy, weird, unique tunes and somehow sound old and new at the same time. The recordings (which are as interesting as the songs) sound, not so much "underwater" but more like laying in a warm bathtub with your ears right on the surface line so that the water creates strange fluctuations in your hearing between obscure and waterlogged and clear and airy. (Huh?) When I first heard the LP I wrote a gushing email to band leader Greer McGettrick saying I thought they sounded kind of like the the Country Teasers playing the Amps (ok fine, the Breeders) covers with microphones borrowed from the "White Light / White Heat" sessions." - Lars Finberg (Intelligence/Ohsees), The Stranger

SWIFTUMZ
Chris McVicker—a.k.a. Swiftumz, famous for penning the fastest selling Hunx & His Punx single—sambas through ’80s Factory singles, afternoon hits of MDMA on the beach, Ibizia before techno, Glaswegian nonchalance, Stolen Kisses and tripping at the Haçienda (the San Francisco one; Manchester’s closed down years ago). Seriously, it’s all present—but like any other great interpreter of Britain’s finest musical traditions, McVicker is just a guy from near Mac Dre’s hometown in Northern California who might laugh if one told him that “More Than Sleep” should be in a Sofia Coppola movie, because he was probably aiming higher than that. Like the best Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk commercial ever, his album "Don’t Trip" is your summer jam. www.midheaven.com/item/ dont-trip-by-swiftumz-lp

CHRIS THAYER
San Francisco comedian Chris Thayer is mining new depths of self-objectification with his droll, serrated deadpan. He might very well be the hate-cuddle love child of early SNL's Michael O'Donoghue and young adult author Judy Blume.

Nick WaterhouseWednesday June 6, 2012

Rickshaw Stop & Pop Philosopher present
Nick Waterhouse Album Release

This is the album release for Nick Waterhouse's debut album!

Tickets and more info here

Nick Waterhouse plays R&B music like it's new again - raw and rhythmic and vital, without irony and shy of revivalism. Conceived in the bedrooms, MUNI commutes, and DJ booths of San Francisco, and finally birthed in his native, all-analog studio in Southern California, the self-produced 45 single "Some Place" has caught the ear of the modern listener. After a sell-out pressing and coverage from the likes of The San Francisco Chronicle, LA Record, Aquarium Drunkard, and XM Sirius radio - including play on Lou Reed's own show - he has taken to performing with the Tarots, a rough n' ready group of guys and girls. The two-horn, three-girl and rhythm section ensemble brings to life the sax-driven sound of Waterhouse's particular brand of American music.

"Self described as a 'midnight-hour R&B shake-fest' the self-produced debut of L.A. based Waterhouse, backed by the Turn-Keys, is an eerie R&B rhumba found on the flip with the torrid saxophone of Ira Raibon trading fours with the rest of the group. In short, “Some Place” cooks." -- Aquarium Drunkard

Sponsored by Amoeba Records, Vestal Watch, and Wasteland

The Haley Butcher Organization is a non-profit that hosts music and art events for the benefit of terminally ill children. We got our start when our bestfriend Haley Butcher passed away at seventeen from an extremely rare blood disorder. Haley was a spitfire dancing fiend and it's only appropriate that we perpetuate her memory with lively shows and events, all the while raising money for other sick kids. We're typically LA based, but we're venturing north to Haley's favorite city this summer to spread our philanthropic moshpit vibes. COME AND DANCE WITH US!
